SUNLIGHT KIN CIC

We strengthen the groups

that strengthen our community.

BRILLIANT GROUPS

SHOULDN’T BE HIDDEN

Across Weymouth & Portland, small clubs, societies and community organisations are keeping local knowledge, skills, heritage and community life alive. But getting the word out isn’t always easy.

When volunteers are already giving their time to organise activities, support members, and keep a group running … promotion can quickly slip down the list.

Or it becomes one person’s job. They manage Facebook. They write the posts. They remember the events. They try to work out what to say. And when that person is busy, everything can stop.

We think there’s a better way.

  • Historic map showing Weymouth, Portland and Chesil Beach on the Dorset coast.
  • Fishing boats and small vessels in Weymouth Harbour on the Dorset coast.
  • Watercolour view of Weymouth Beach, the seafront and surrounding Dorset hills.
  • Portland Bill Lighthouse overlooking the rocky coastline of the Isle of Portland, Dorset.
  • People enjoying the sea and beach at Weymouth on the Dorset coast.
  • View across Weymouth Bay and the sweeping Dorset coastline from the surrounding hills.
  • Weymouth's red Jubilee Clock overlooking the beach and seafront in Dorset.
  • Watercolour view across Chesil Beach and The Fleet on the Dorset coast.

GETTING SEEN

SHOULD BE A TEAM JOB

This is what makes Coastal Kin different. Instead of sending one volunteer on a training course and expecting them to come back and fix everything, we bring several people from the same organisation around one table.

Together, you make some simple decisions about who you want to reach, what you want people to know, where it makes sense to show up, and how different members of the group can contribute.

It means marketing knowledge and responsibility start to become shared across the organisation, rather than sitting with one already-busy volunteer. Shared decisions. Shared confidence. Shared responsibility.

ONE GROUP. ONE TABLE. YOUR REAL CHALLENGES.

OUR FIRST COASTAL KIN PILOT WORKSHOP

GET YOUR COMMUNITY GROUP SEEN

A practical 90-minute session designed specifically for small volunteer-led organisations. Together, we’ll work through four simple questions.

  • Where are we now?
  • Who do we want to reach?
  • What should we focus on?
  • How can we share the load?

So that by the end of the 90minutes you will leave with a simple visibility plan your whole team understands.

✓ Who you’re trying to reach
✓ What you actually need to say
✓ Where it’s worth showing up
✓ Who can realistically do what

FANCY BEING OUR FIRST PILOT GROUP?

Hello

I’m Clare

As this is a new project, so it’s just me at the moment. I grew up around Weymouth, and my family home has been here for many years. After spending time away, I recently moved back to the area and wanted to feel part of the local community again.

But I found something surprisingly difficult: finding the groups, activities, and communities already here to get involved with.

I knew they existed. I just didn’t always know where to find them.

That got me thinking about the brilliant volunteer-led groups doing good things across Weymouth & Portland … and how difficult it can be to get noticed. Especially when the people running them are already giving so much of their time.

That’s where the idea for Coastal Kin began. I’m starting small: listening, learning, and working alongside local groups to see whether we can make that bit easier.

Because great community groups shouldn’t be hard to find.

FANCY BEING OUR FIRST PILOT GROUP?

COULD YOUR GROUP HELP US TEST IT?

THE 90-MINUTE PILOT IS COMPLETELY FREE

Right now, we’re looking for ONE small volunteer-led organisation in Weymouth & Portland.

We’re looking for a group that can bring several volunteers together for the session, take part openly in the activities and discussions, and give us honest feedback afterwards about what was useful and what could be improved.

You’ll get a practical workshop designed around your real organisation and your real challenges. In return, your experience will help us develop something that can eventually support many more volunteer-led groups across the area.

FANCY BEING OUR FIRST PILOT GROUP?

Tell us a little about your organisation and the challenge you’re currently facing.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

ONE GROUP IS JUST THE START

This first workshop is deliberately small. It gives us the opportunity to test the approach, listen to volunteers and collect evidence about what small community organisations genuinely find useful.

Once the pilot has been completed and evaluated, we’ll begin looking for funding and local partners to help us offer more workshops to volunteer-led groups across Weymouth & Portland. Particularly where cost might otherwise prevent a group from accessing support.

The aim isn’t to create more work for volunteers. It’s to strengthen the brilliant groups already doing good things locally so they can reach more people, involve more people and continue playing an important role in community life.

JUST THE BEGINNING

Sunlight Kin CIC -The Big VISION

Visibility support is our starting point. It isn’t the whole ambition.

Coastal Kin is the first project from Sunlight Kin CIC, a community organisation being developed around stronger connections between people, community and place.

We’re starting with visibility because it’s a practical problem we can solve now. Over time, our ambition is bigger: helping people connect more deeply with the groups, knowledge, stories, and places that make Weymouth & Portland special.

We’re not trying to build all of that at once.

We’re starting with one group, one workshop, and something useful we can test properly.

WORK WITH US

If you work with local communities, volunteering, or funding and think Coastal Kin could support groups you know, I’d love to hear from you.
